Scott and I were blessed to attend a preparedness fair not
too long ago. I was so excited about it that I have decided I want to share
with you all the things we learned!
We have been married almost three years and realized we
didn’t know where to start or how to start our own family preparation. I have
found that this is the case with almost anyone, whether you have been married
five months or 50 years. So for this first blog I want to share just basic
information and we will get into more details as the weeks progress.
Why should we store food, water, have good finances and be
self-reliant?
“Be prepared in all things against the day when tribulation
and desolation are sent forth upon the wicked.” Doctrine and Covenants 29:8,
109:8
“I am suggesting that
the time has come to get our houses in order- there is a portent (ominous
significance) of stormy weather ahead to which we had better give heed.” President
Gordon B. Hinckley
“Too often we bask in our comfortable complacency and
rationalize that the ravages of war, economic disaster, famine and earthquake
cannot happen here. Those who believe this are either not acquainted with the
revelations of the Lord, or they do not believe them. Those who smugly think
these calamities will not happen, that somehow will be set aside because of the
righteousness of the Saints, are deceived and will rue the day they harbored
such a delusion.” President Ezra Taft Benson
So where do we start? It is extremely overwhelming to try
and get everything in order all at once. So remember that it took God to create
the world and everything in it in six days. So it is with our preparedness-one
day at a time!
You can start on your next grocery shopping trip! Just add a
couple extra cans of beans, or pickles, or whatever it is that your family will
eat. You don’t need to buy extra of everything you buy, but do what you can. If
you are worried about space, try storing it under your bed, in drawers, or in
extra space in a closet. We even learned how to make furniture from your food
storage! Just gradually keep adding to your storage until you have three days
worth, one weeks worth, one months worth, three months worth, all the way until
you have one year of food! That will be an exciting day for us!
